Alpine herbs bitter - 50cl
Spicy-bitter herbal spirit from Kleinbasel.
The alpine herb bitter is neither an actual liqueur nor a dry bitters. Made in the Basel city distillery, it has spicy, citric and bitter-herbal traits, while the addition of port wine also creates a certain sweetness.
In the middle of Kleinbasel you can find this beverage factory "Stadtbrennerei & Stadtkelter". Since 2018 the brothers David and Tobias Buser have been producing various alcoholic liquids here in a compact back building according to craft principles and in small quantities.
It took them three years to prepare and remodel the location, as the various authorities had to meet strict requirements. However, it was important to the brothers to produce niche products that are only just becoming popular again in the gastronomy scene. These include a grain brandy, an absinthe and this alpine herb bitter.
A crucial component of the herb bitters is the musk yarrow, which is also known as Iva or alpine wormwood. There are also medicinal angelica, citrus fruits, violet root, juniper berries, thyme and wormwood. However, not all of the components for the spirit come from the Basel city distillery in the Alps: it also contains botanicals such as tonka bean and ginger.
However, no dyes are added. Instead, the alpine herb bitters are rounded off after storage with a port wine, which is available from the renowned house Niepoort, and these are gently filtered. Because of the reduced sweetness, this is a herbal spirit.
